Current problems stabilised
We have had some database problems, but have had a valid backup to keep all the data safe throughout.
The problem has been ongoing, but I think I’ve got it all stabilised. I’ll keep frequent backups until I’m sure.
As far as the character set problem we still have, I will find a way to run a search and replace in the database soon.

OK, I have run a search and replace that fixed Microsoft Word quotes and m-dashes, so if you see any more quirky characters, please let me know. In the meanwhile, I’m going to backup everything again now that we’ve got a stable database.

There are some characters that still don’t show up just right — a multiplication mark, em-dashes not enclosed by spaces, and some opening single quotation marks — but I’ll be correcting those myself.

If you get a chance, test
If you get a chance, test pasting from <shudder> Micro$oft Word. The problem should have been a retroactive one, not a current one, now that everything is supposed to agree.
If you get me the coding for the single opening quotes, btw, I’ll run a replace on it.
